For my image visualization final project, I created an infographic poster that identified various predatory microtransaction marketing models seen in today’s video game industry. Today, most prominent online games make its principal revenue not from the initial game sale but through multiple small transactions for the player’s add-on content. Most of these are services are purely cosmetic, but some create gameplay advantages, which can leave a player mentally addicted to those services.

This poster is designed to point out the most common examples of microtransactions and how effective they are. The poster concludes with three call-to-action points consumers, game developers, and government regulatory agencies should do to curb addictive spending behavior.

Several icons were created to support the various talking points about the subject. Many of these were 3D shapes created in Adobe Dimensions.

This project’s research gathers from posted market statistics and relevant news articles from the last ten years. I investigated several games, including popular titles like Fortnite, Minecraft, Overwatch, Apex Legends, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft.

This poster successfully exposes critical facts about today’s video game microtransaction market. It will inform viewers how they can protect themselves and their children from the most predatory microtransaction models.
